Copper still and bourbon barrels at a Robertson County distillery
What to expect at Black Patch Distilling Co.
Robertson County has one of the deeper whiskey histories in America — the Nelson family, whose bourbon predates Jack Daniel's, was based just south in Greenbrier before Prohibition shut the industry down. Black Patch Distilling is part of the county's small revival, producing bourbon, rye and a corn whiskey using local grain. The tasting room is honest and unpretentious: a bar, a few barrels for tables, the still visible through a glass wall, and a knowledgeable pour-master who'll walk you through what you're drinking.
The standard visit is a $15 tour-and-tasting: 30 minutes on the production floor (grain to bottle, no shortcuts in the explanation) and then four half-ounce pours at the bar. Add-on flights of aged expressions are $10-15. There's no food, but they welcome outside snacks and will point you to the pizza place next door. The vibe is relaxed — this is a working distillery, not a tourist attraction, and it feels like one.
Best time is Saturday afternoon when the tasting room is liveliest and tours run on the hour. Book online for weekend tours; Thursday and Friday walk-ins are usually fine. Designated drivers pay $5 for a soft-drink flight, which is a nice touch. Combine with dinner at Bella's or the food trucks at the square. If you're driving, this is a two-drink stop — full pours add up fast.
