What to expect at Highway 49 Scenic Drive

Highway 49 west from Springfield to Cumberland City is the drive Robertson County locals put on when out-of-town family visits. It is 25 miles of rolling farmland, dark-fired tobacco barns weathered nearly black, hand-laid stone fences from the 1830s, and 19th-century farmhouses that have been in the same families for six generations. There are no attractions ticketed along it — the drive is the attraction — but it is the most honest introduction to what this piece of Tennessee actually looks like.

Leave Springfield west, pass through Cedar Hill (worth a stop at the old railroad depot and the small country store), continue past the Wessyngton Plantation sign (see separate entry) and drop down into the Red River valley. The road narrows, the barns get older, and by the time you reach Adams you're in classic upper-Cumberland tobacco country. From Adams you can loop back on Highway 41 or continue west to Port Royal State Historic Park and then Cumberland City on the river. The full loop back to Springfield is about 90 minutes without stops.

Best in late October when the tobacco is hanging in the barns and the leaves turn, or in May when the pastures are impossibly green. Do it as a morning drive with coffee from the square, stops at Cedar Hill and Port Royal, and lunch in Adams or back in Springfield. This is a car drive — there is no transit, no cycling infrastructure and no shoulder for walkers. Fuel up before you leave Springfield; gas stations are thin west of Cedar Hill.
