About Columbia

The city's history runs from the Revolutionary War, when it was burned by British troops, through the Civil War, when much of it was again destroyed. Today Columbia blends government, education and military life, with Fort Jackson just east of town. The three rivers and the Congaree Riverwalk offer outdoor spaces, while the Vista and Main Street districts concentrate restaurants, bars and entertainment. It is a Southern capital that feels both historic and current, shaped by its rivers, its university and its role in state politics.

The Vista. A former warehouse district along Gervais Street, now full of restaurants, bars and galleries, within walking distance of the State House and the Congaree River.

Main Street District. The city's central business and cultural corridor, home to the Columbia Museum of Art, the Nickelodeon theatre and a growing number of hotels and shops.

Five Points. The historic student quarter next to the University of South Carolina, known for its bars, casual eateries and late-night energy.

Devine Street. A quieter commercial strip southeast of downtown with independent shops, cafes and restaurants, convenient to the Shandon and Heathwood neighbourhoods.

Getting there and around

Columbia is served by Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) in nearby Cayce, with flights to major hubs. By road, Interstates 20, 26, 77 and 126 meet here, making it a convenient stop between Charlotte, Charleston, Augusta and Atlanta. Amtrak's Silver Star stops at the Columbia station on Pulaski Street. Getting around is easiest by car, though downtown is walkable in the Vista and Main Street areas. The COMET bus system covers the city and university, and bike lanes and the riverwalk trails connect several districts.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for visiting Columbia, with mild temperatures suited to walking downtown and along the river. Summer is hot and humid, typical of the South Carolina Midlands, so outdoor activities are best in the morning. Autumn brings college football Saturdays, when the city fills around Williams-Brice Stadium. Winter is generally mild, with occasional cold snaps, and the State House and museums remain open year-round.
